FAQs
What can I expect during my first therapy session?
You and your therapist will discuss your reasons for seeking therapy in a warm and nonjudgmental space. You will also explore your goals for treatment and identify areas of growth that are important to you. Afterward, your therapist will give you an honest assessment of how your problems may have developed and how therapy can help resolve them. You will then decide whether and how to move forward with therapy together.
How do I know if a therapist is the right fit for me?
Research is clear that the most important factor for therapy to be effective is the relationship between client and therapist. Therapy is costly, both in terms of money and time; thus, choosing the right person for you is crucial. Three helpful questions to ask yourself when choosing a therapist are: Do I feel I can trust this person? 2) Do they give me a sense of emotional safety? 3) Do they make me feel seen and understood?
Can psychotherapy make me feel worse?
The issues that bring people to therapy are often deep and longstanding. Working through them naturally involves unearthing painful memories and bearing the emotions attached to them, perhaps for the first time. This can be extremely painful, but it is a necessary part of overcoming past trauma and learning to live differently in the present. In short, the only way out is through, and for most people this journey is one worth taking.
